Higher Studies Information
Some info and things I learnt while initially communicating with professors:
- My subject of mail was: "Mail from a Graduate Aspirant, IIT Kharagpur, India"
- In most cases a text resume is attached with this mail. Most professors are uncomfortable with attached resume in DOC formats.
- These mails are contacts made to professors in the Universities even before I started applying. Most of these mails didn't evoke any reply: probably directly went to 'Deleted Mail' :-) Some replys were simply "You have a good chance of getting through. Please apply." and their variation. Very few replys were followed with mail-conversations.
- People have got different opinions about what to write in this mail (huh !! This statement is true for anything :-) But some things which generally come out are: your achievements, your credentials and resume.
- Highlight your achievements, in whatever way you can. Not only academics, your work ex is also your achievement.
- One friend of mine commented: Don't show that you are just in need of some funds, show your interest in working. Worth keeping in mind.
- Have to be careful about grammer/syntax: this is the first impression you are going to make.
Statement Of Purpose
One of the most important part of the application process. It takes quite a bit of patience and number of revisions to get to the final form. I tried to get as many comments for the essay as possible: friends, collegues, professors. I didn't implement all the comments though. My SOP is here.
